Depression generally manifests as overwhelming feelings of sadness, guilt, irritability, emptiness, hopelessness, helplessness, restlessness or anxiety.  Loss of appetite or overeating, losing interest in activities that once were once enjoyable, and problems concentrating are also common symptoms of depression.  Depression can develop as a reaction to certain life events, symptoms of specific medical conditions, a side-effect of a medical treatment or may appear without any apparent cause.
